On July 23rd, 2009, Herman Düne played an excellent concert in Munich, which for me was the best concert I saw since Iron & Wine performed in the local church in Dachau and I witnessed the Magnetic Fields playing an unplugged concert. I first realized Herman Düne in John Peel’s BBC Radio 1 show several years ago, but never bothered to listen to their music in more detail. It was one year ago that I first did so and became really enthusiastic about them. The music of a band or performer only thrills me if it has a feature that makes it distinctive and unique, such as the dual melodic noise pop experimentalism of Yo La Tengo, the voice of Mark E. Smith for The Fall, the distinct combination of intellectuality, left-wing politics, rock, and groove that I hear and feel in Die Sterne, the combination of Lou Barlow’s melodic voice and trashy LoFi rock in Sebadoh, the orchastrality and dialectic of acceleration and deceleration present in Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Mogwai, the distinct beauty of sound of Catpower, Bonnie Prince Billy, and Low . So there is something about Herman Düne that makes this band’s sound distinct and unique and that cannot be put into words. They sound for me like a combination of the best elements of antifolk bands like the Moldy Peaches, 60s girlie bands like the Shangri-Las or the Supremes, the Ennio Morricone Western flavour divulged by the sounds of bands like Calexico and the Friends of Dean Martinez, and a good dose of the Beatles and the Velvet Underground. Like Belle and Sebastian, Herman Düne create a 60s aura that sounds contemporary and never antiquated (as most 60s bands do today, with a few exceptions such as the Velvet Underground or Nick Drake). If you do not know Herman Düne, then I recommend that you listen to their albums “Next Year in Zion” and “Giant”.

My second encounter with Iron and Wine was today, August 15 2008, at the Frequency Festival in Salzburg. Theodor W. Adorno once wrote: “Writing poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric,” (Kulturkritik und Gesellschaft 1: p. 303).

Theodor W. Adorno once wrote: “Writing poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric,” (Kulturkritik und Gesellschaft 1: p. 303). The first time I saw Iron and Wine live was in St. Jacob’s Church in Dachau in January 2008. In the extermination camp Dachau, the Nazis detained 200 000 people and killed more than 40 000. So Dachau is a place with a negative history. Therefore you can rephrase Adorno: “Is it barbaric to sing songs in Dachau?”. No matter in which way one might answer this question, the concert had a certain symbolism because fascism is the worst form of domination you can imagine, and the Catholic church is another form of domination, and there were connections between both. Iron and Wine symbolically showed the connectedness of these two forms of domination. Herbert Marcuse disagreed to Adorno’s assessment and argued that authentic art preserves the memory of the possible other world “in spite of and against” Auschwitz (The Aesthetic Dimension: p. 56). So the question then is if Iron and Wine’s music is an authentic autonomous piece of Art in Marcuse’s and Adorno’s sense.

My second encounter with Iron and Wine was today, August 15 2008, at the Frequency Festival in Salzburg. There was so much rain today, the camping ground was full of mud, walking on the grass resulted in sinking half a meter into the mud. It was worth standing in the rain for seeing Iron and Wine (I would not have stayed in the heavy rain for any of the other bands that performed today) perform mainly songs from their latest album “The Shepherd’s Dog”, which deals among other topics with the feeling of political alienation in the second Bush era. And alienation might just be the right topic for a music that expresses this feeling in such a beauty in order to create a dialectic tension of content and aesthetic form. It is this tension that lets me see Iron and Wine as a form of authentic artistic resistance that reminds as that the world could be other and different. And this works, also in a church in Dachau.

Musically the songs were performed in a more groovy and orchestral mood than half a year ago, combining American folk and reggae influences. It was a laid back stream of music, in which two times three songs were merged into one 15 minute whole.

Iron and Wine’s singer Sam Beam reminds me of Will Oldham because of his long beard. And both look like Jesus would have looked, if he had existed. In the church in Dachau, Beam stood right below a huge statue of Jesus. And although he is not the reincarnation of Jesus, Iron and Wine truly create a musical heaven on earth.

I have made videos of some of the performed songs that you can watch below. In some of the videos, you can see and hear the rain that beautifully accompanies Iron and Wine’s music.

The Frequency is an Austrian alt rock festival that attracts approximately 50 000 guests. It takes place near Salzburg

It is not the greatest of all rock festivals – given the facts that: this year the headliners at Lollapalooza (USA) are among others Radiohead and Cat Power, the Benicassim f2008 estival (Spain) featured Leonhard Cohen, Death Cab for Cutie, My Bloody Valentine, Sigur Ros, Spiritualized, Pukkelpop 2008 (Belgium) features among others Sigur Ros, Editors, Flaming Lips, Tindersticks, Mercury Rev, Roskilde Festival (Denmark) 2008 featured Radiohead, Bonnie Prince Billy, Björk, Neil Young, My Blood Valentine, and the All Tomorrow’s Party Festival 2008 (New York) includes e.g. Built to Spill, Tortoise, Meat Puppets, Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Mogwai, Yo La Tengo, Shellac, Silver Mount Zion, Mercury Rev, My Bloody Valentine, Dinosaur Jr.

That is the creme of the crop of alt and indie rock. Well, Frequency does not have all of that. Instead its headliners 2008 are R.E.M., Die Fantastischen Vier, and the Killers.

If you live in Austria and do not have the money to go to the great festivals mentioned above, then you have to choose the mediocre option. Globalized rich and localized poor – that’s the way the story of contemporary capitalism goes. Nonetheless Frequency is an opportunity to see a few good bands.

On day 1, the Dresden Dolls played a great concert. The highlights for me were that they covered Grauzone’s “Eisbär” and Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs”.

On the small stage, José González played a concert that was rather unusual for Frequency because the latter hardly features slowcore performers . González has a reduced minimalistic sound, he just uses an acoustic guitar and his beautiful voice. He has thus far published two albums: Vaneer (2003) and In Our Nature (2007). I found the first one great and innovative, the second one really boring, repetitive, and standardized. The concert was like his two albums. The first half featured mainly new songs, which I find more repetitive and standardized. The second half then featured in my opinion great artistic pieces like “Crosses”, “Heartbeats” and his cover version of the Massive Attack Song “Teardrop” (the only exception from the rule on the new album). The highlight for me was that he gave a great performance of the Joy Division classic “Love Will Tear Us Apart”. All in all it was a great concert.

José Gonzalez performing “Love Will Tear Us Apart”. Hear Joy Division’s 1980 original version here.

The headliners of day 1 were R.E.M. What can one say about them? Old men delivering a great live performance supported by a perfect video art show. They have shown that they are still much better than many of the standardized boring clown bands that day one featured, such as Travis, Maximo Park, Flogging Molly or Ladytron. I did not at all like the recent R.E.M. album “Accelerate”, which is a poor shadow of what they were once able to do. The concert therefore also worked best at those parts that featured older and classic songs such as “Imitation of Life”, “Electrolite”, “Orange Crush”, “Drive”, “Man on the Moon”, “Losing my Religion”, “It’s the End of the World as we Know It”. The opening song was, well fitting the festival’s title, “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?”. A song that I was missing was my favourite R.E.M. track “Leave”. Overall, it was great for me to experience for the first time this influential classical alt rock band in an impressive performance. Most of the other bands that perform at Frequency would not exist without the influences by R.E.M.

Tomorrow, day 2 will feature among others my festival favourites Iron and Wine and the socialist rockers Manic Street Preachers.

Iron and Wine “Jezebel”
